THE COMBINED ASIA AND PACIFIC FEDERATION CONGRESS
The ICS Asia Pacific Federation Congress, and the 66th Annual Convention of the ICS Philippine Section, will be conducted on November 21-22, 2015, in Manila, Philippines, at the Diamond Hotel. Dr. Jesus Sison, President of the ICS Philippine Section, and Dr. Francis Decangchon, Chairman, Organizing Committee, have established the theme of the Congress “Broadening Our Boundaries: Excellence in Surgery”. A very significant program on humanitarian surgery will be presented with World President Prof. Yik-Hong Ho Co-Chairing the session. A program entitled “Aesthetics Symposium with Live Workshop Demonstrations of Different Aesthetic/Cosmetic Office Procedures” will also be conducted. Article 1: EARLY REPORT ON THE MAJOR SUCCESS OF THE JUBILEE CONGRESS IN PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC
Prof. Karel Novak hosted a successful Jubilee World Congress in Prague and Pilsen, Czech Republic. Prof. Novak will produce a final report, which will appear in a forthcoming issue of this newsletter. In the words of ICS World President Prof.Yik-Hong, Prof. Novak kept everyone together, kept everyone on time, and all events occurred in accord with plan. The social and scientific programs were excellent. ICS Executive Director Max Downham presented Prof.Novak with a personal letter from the Mayor of Chicago, Rahm Emanuel, as Chicago and Prague are sister cities. We look forward with positive anticipation to the final report from Prof. Novak,and the information will be coming in our next E-Newsletter.
Article 2: ACTIVITIES AT THE INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM OF SURGICAL SCIENCE (IMSS)
The International Museum of Surgical Science is experiencing a 43% year to date increase in overall attendance compared to 2014. This increase is attributed to aggressive social media efforts (including Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook), a vast increase in public programming, media coverage, collaboration and the creation of new exhibits, which have strengthened the Museum’s public profile. On a year to date basis, gift shop purchases have increased 36%, and group attendance has increased by 54%. A dynamic new exhibit entitled, 4th Floor North rotates and displays the Museum’s exquisite collection of artifacts in the permanent collection and hosts artists in residence. The Museum’s contemporary arts program is enjoying renewed interest. Currently on display, Chicago-based artist Stevie Hanley’s significant public profile and strong conceptual connection to the Museum’s mission has drawn large crowds and frequent press coverage. A public program in September entitled, The Wonders of Music and Medicine was conducted. This program incorporated a discussion with a music therapist and a beautiful performance by a Chicago based winds ensemble. Museum staff members are also excited to be participating in Chicago Artists Month during October of 2015. Chicago Artists Month is a city of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs supported marketing platform. Overall, the dynamic staff of the International Museum of Surgical Science is achieving tremendous results and will continue to do better and better.
Article 3: ICS OFFICIAL JOURNAL, INTERNATIONAL SURGERY
Under the continuing excellent guidance of Editor-in-Chief Professor Christopher Chen, the official Journal of the International College of Surgeons, International Surgery, continues to make outstanding progress. The impact factor of International Surgery, as recently reported, has increased by 100%, compared to the prior measurement period. With an increased focus on ever increasing quality of the articles published in International Surgery, the frequency of publishing will be on a bimonthly basis beginning with Vol. 100 issue 7-8 and continuing thereafter.
We continue to be aware that some Fellows of the International College of Surgeons are not receiving the online issues without charge.
Article 4: CALL FOR EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST IN HOSTING ICS FEDERATION CONGRESSES (2017 AND 2019) AND WORLD BIENNIAL CONGRESSES (2018 AND 2020)
In order to hold successful meetings in all parts of the world, advanced planning is essential. ICS National Section of Peru, has already expressed interest in hosting the ICS Biennial World Congress in 2018. All other National Sections who also have an interest in hosting meetings are encouraged and cordially invited to express their interest to the Chair, Congress Program and Events Standing Committee, Prof, Clement Chan, through the ICS Executive Director, Max Downham. Further information will then be provided to help formulate a competitive bid with a viable business case. Article 5: SIMPLIFICATION OF THE INTERNATIONAL CONSTITUTION AND BYLAWS
The only constant in our lives is change. This is true in terms of the International Constitution and Bylaws. At a recent meeting of the International Constitution and Bylaws Standing Committee, ICS World President Professor Yik-Hong Ho proposed the following resolution – that the International Constitution and Bylaws Standing Committee recommends that the International Executive Council authorize the Constitution and Bylaws Standing Committee to conduct a thorough review of the existing International Constitution and Bylaws with the objective of achieving a balance between the simplification of the language of the existing International Constitution and Bylaws with language that is consistent amongst its various provisions, while at the same time achieving the precision and clarity consistent with applicable laws.
