ACTIVITY REPORT
Professor Gia Tomadze,
during the training in the Visceral Surgery
and Transplantation Departments
of Geneva University Hospitals
(June 5, 2007 – July 5, 2007)
From June 5 2007 till July 5 2007 I was visiting Geneva University Hospitals upon invitation of the head of Visceral Surgery department Prof. Philippe Morel and with combined financial support of International Colleague of Surgeons and Georgia Representation of Pharmaceutical company “NOVARTIS”.
Site of my training was Visceral Surgery and Transplantation Departments of above mentioned University (Head, Prof. Philippe Morel).

In the Geneva University Hospital
Main goals of my visit were:
- To be trained in liver surgery, particularly in liver transplantation;
- To become familiar with the system of organ transplantation in Geneva,
- To sign agreement about cooperation in liver transplantation between our “General Surgery Clinic” (Tbilisi, Georgia) and Geneva University Hospital.
DURING MY ONE MONTH VISIT in Geneva University Hospital:
- Was prepared The Agreement between HUG (Geneva University Hospitals) , GAT (Georgian Association of Transpalntologists) and our “General Surgery Clinic”, signed from Georgia side and principal agreement has been achieved with Swiss side. In about one month The Agreement will be signed from Swiss side by Hospital CEO (Chief Executive Officer) after preliminary approval of special committee. As a result of the agreement, Georgian doctors will be accepted for training in Geneva University Hospital and Swiss surgeons will come to Georgia to begin liver transplantation program from living related donors.
- Became familiar with current achievements of liver surgery, particularly with the status of liver transplantation. I was participating in donor harvesting operations in Geneva as well as outside of the city (flying together with donor team by helicopter to Syon). Attended and in 2 cases participated in liver transplantations in recipient from cadaver as well as from living related donor.

- I had presentation in Visceral Surgery Department of HUG about Georgia and “Status of Organ Transplantation in Georgia and Caucasian Region”.
- I was attending rounds in Visceral Surgery as well as in Transplantation departments, participating in preoperative evaluation and postoperative follow-up of patients, became familiar with immunosuppressive protocols currently used in HUG for liver transplant patients.
- Attended Robotic Surgery operations with “Da Vinci” (gastric bypass), laparoscopic sigmoidectomy (due to diverticulitis), laparoscopic cholecystectomy, laparoscopic hernia repair, trumectomy, gastrectomy, left sided liver resection, right sided liver resection, Whipple operation.

- Became familiar with organization of transplantation system in Geneva Cantonal Hospital, with transplant coordinators, with statistic of transplant operations, results.
