The International College of Surgeons- leading the way in best practice
The International College of Surgeons (ICS) is committed to its vision of “improving the lives of patients through the development and education of its members, and advancing the field of surgery.” The ICS urges all members to support and introduce whenever possible, standard double gloving with the additional benefit of a perforation indication system for all surgical intervention.
The World President of the ICS, Professor Nadey Hakim, supports this evidence- based practice and always uses two pairs of surgical gloves for all procedures. Perforations are difficult to detect conventionally (up to 88% undetected) 1 . Evidence clearly demonstrates that to reduce risk to the patient and surgical team using a double gloving indicator system can mean up to 97% of punctures are detected. 2 President Hakim, in agreement comments, “Wearing two gloves can reduce the number of perforations to the innermost glove that might allow cross - infection between the surgical team and the patient.” 3
“Team skills and dealing effectively with diverse patient cultures requires us to be a truly diverse organisation. However, this should not compromise our goals which are to ensure the best possible outcomes for all patients wherever in the world they are being treated.”
“The evidence is irrefutable. The world-renowned Cochrane Collaboration review on double gloving stated, that wearing two pairs of gloves during low risk surgery offered significantly more protection against perforations than single gloving. 4
“The ICS must now act and urge its members to utilise this method of gloving for all of the surgical team, in order to protect both themselves and their patients.”
